WHO IS THE LONDON FOODIE IN NEW YORK?

My name’s Anna Helm-Baxter and I’m the writer behind London Foodie in New York- a blog about culinary rule-breaking and saving the reputation of British food from across the pond!  I’m 27 years old half-brit/half yank, which basically makes me a mutt with a confused accent.  And this mutt likes to cook and eat. I trained at Leiths School of Food and Wine in London, where I first got in the habit of rule-breaking. I now live and work as a food stylist and occasionally paid food writer in New York.

WHY WRITE ABOUT FOOD?

There is a generation of young men and women out there who have grown up not learning how to cook but wanting to know how. I write because I believe that it’s possible to become a great cook or just a somebody who can put dinner on the table for friends/family without formal training. People don’t cook because they don’t have time and because they are scared. My recipes are easy, quick- my sister calls them: I can-do that recipes!  There are recipes perfect for a work night when you want something quick and healthy and there are indulgent deserts to take along to a weekend potluck and impress your friends with. Cooking isn’t half as hard as one might think- and I try to make my recipes flexible allowing for you to alternate ingredients without thinking it might make the recipe fail. And on the note of failure I should add that some of my greatest successes were the result of what I thought might be a failure.

THINGS I LOVE….

Sucking on mango seeds- you have to go at it and just hope you don’t loose too many of the juices to your chin. Eating Marmite with peanut butter- try it, I promise it will change your life. Scraping the sides of a lasagna dish after the lasagnas been eaten- disgusting, I know but I just can’t resist those crispy burnt edges of cheese. Raspberries. Baking. Eating with friends.

THINGS I HATE….

Corn stuck in my teeth, shucking corn, high fructose corn syrup (despite the theme, I do not hate corn!). Okra. Really bitter coffee. Desserts that are too sweet. Cookbooks without pictures. People canceling at the last minute. Long recipes. Foams (unless it’s on my cappuccino).

RECIPES

All recipes , unless mentioned are photographed at home using a Canon SD1000 camera or most recently my Canon Rebel XLS. I test all of my recipes using the metric system and more recently in cups. Please see the notes page for further explanations on how I test my recipes. If you do not recognise an ingredient, it is probably because like my spelling and grammar I try to stick to using English English. Although, these days I do sometimes forget what is English and what is American so please see my translations page for further guidance.

Hi, Anna.

I really enjoy your blog! Keep ‘em coming.

I couldn’t find an email address for you, but wanted you to check out a service we just launched called Outalot:
http://wwww.outalot.com

Outalot is a location-based guide, available now for just New York City, that makes it easy for users to find nearby restaurants, bars, and movie theaters. It’s available online, on iPhones, and on other mobile phones.

You can rate, comment, and tag places in Outalot. You can also “bookmark” favorite places around town and share them with your friends. Think of the service as social bookmarking, but for physical places rather than URLs.

We’re very eager for feedback, so if you find time to check out the service, please let us know what you think of it.

Thank you,

Joe Cohen

Hello !
I am a Blogger and web developer (and artist) who has been trying to improve the blogosphere for Bloggers. The problem? Too many irrelevant press releases. Also, hard to make money.
So I invented Blogio, which is a pipeline between marketers & bloggers. The idea is to let marketers choose their niche and write RELEVANT material that bloggers might care about. Also, share the revenue with the Bloggers.
This week, we (finally) officially launched. We’re testing this new concept to see if it works. So, we have our first half dozen orders from marketers. And your blog happens to be in a niche requested by one of these marketers.
I’m asking you to take a look at Blogio. If you like what you see, open an account (there is no charge) and expect good, relevant content from Blogio. If you don’t like what you see – well, I tried. (Your comments & suggestions are welcome).Even though you don’t know me, I ask that you take a leap of faith and consider my sincere goal – to help the blogging movement grow and prosper. Below is a snippet of the communique that we believe you would be interested in reviewing:

Hi Anna,
Torrey and I had a great time meeting you and Don at the backyard party.
I wanted to invite you both to Barbes, on the F in Park Slope, tonight at 8pm, my band Norden Bombsight is playing in back. There’s a $10 cover I’m afraid.

The pumpkin muffins look like something that I’m going to try over the weekend. Its amazing to see that a fellow person-working-in-New-York was the one that posted up the recipe. Now I just hope that I don’t screw it up!

Hi Anna,

I came across your blog while attempting to research food styling work in London. Ironically, I am an American food lover (from just outside NYC), whose been living in Sydney for a few years, and will be moving to London in 2-3 months.

Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about the food media industry in London? It would be incredibly helpful as I have no contacts in Londontown….

Hope to hear from you soon!

Maddy

PS – I look forward to testing out your Yorkshire puddings when I land and since you’re in NY, do you think you could create a Black and White cookie recipe? I have never seen one in Sydney…

sos- thanks so much! I’ve always thought my photos were pretty rubbish! I just use the kit lens- I’ve been thinking of investing in a macro lens but recently bought a tripod which has helped loads.

Loving your site!! As an English/Australian living in NY, I understand your confusion!! Have to say, Vegemite & peanut butter far outweighs the marmite equivalent!

Hey Anna!!
I read about you and your ideas in the new Jamie Oliver magazine, and had immediately to try out a recipe (the others will follow!)…
Your work about making sweet stuiff sweet with something else than industrial sugar (mostly) is a great great great idea.
Please go on with that, I am gonna check out your website.
I already began to modify your recipes (in my mind) with other stuff -except sugar, and it`s so interesting! You inspired me, thank you for that.

You can jump on my Foodblog, if you want, and you will find photos of on of your recipes (I didn`t get the melty core inside, what a pitty, but it was great!-probably you have a hint for me).
I linked to your website on that article.

(hope, this is not seen as advertisment :o ))

Thank u for inspiration,
love from Hamburg, Germany!

Hi Anna,

I also spotted your blog in the german Jamie Oliver Magazine – I like it very much! The only problem is, that it seems to spread a virus (worm, windows, which hides the harddrive and tells me to pay for “repairing”) via Java. Maybe you could contact your blog hoster, so I can read your blog without having to set up my netbook again :)

Thanks for the great recipes,

Marie
